JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Welcome to TIAA Bank Field where the Patriots will take on the Jacksonville Jaguars. This Week 2 matchup is a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship game where the Pats squeaked by this talented Jags squad.
The Patriots made a couple of roster moves prior to this game.
On Saturday night, the team released receiver Bennie Fowler and subsequently promoted tackle Cole Croston to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. The Patriots then signed Riley McCarron to the practice squad.
The series of transactions came about due to Marcus Cannon’s health situation. The starting right tackle didn’t travel to Jacksonville and will miss this game due to a calf injury. Cannon has been dealing with this injury for a while – he missed all of the preseason – and reinjured it during the team’s win over the Houston Texans.
With Cannon out, LaAdrian Waddle will start at right tackle. Croston, who made the team as an undrafted free agent last year, will be the main backup.
Fowler becomes another receiver casualty and joins the ever-growing list of receivers that couldn’t stick in Foxboro this season. He was signed last week and didn’t last a full seven days with the Patriots. This offseason, the Pats have released the following receivers – Jordan Matthews, Kenny Britt, Eric Decker, Malcolm Mitchell, Chad Hansen, Amara Darboh, Fowler, McCarron, Paul Turner, K.J. Maye and Devin Lucien.
According to ESPN, Patriots first-round pick Sony Michel will make his NFL debut. This comes at the right time since Rex Burkhead is a game-time decision due to a concussion.
