Could Caitlyn Jenner be the next Donald Trump?
Her appearance on “The View” Thursday, in which the hosts quizzed her on her run for governor of California, makes you wonder.
Obviously, there are differences. Jenner is a gold-medal-winning athlete and maybe the most famous transgender woman in the world. But she is also someone who reached a new level of fame through reality TV and whose qualifications for elected office appear to be … reaching a new level of fame through reality TV.
Remind you of anyone?
Speaking of Trump, host Joy Behar asked Jenner whether she supported the lie that Trump had actually defeated Joe Biden in a rigged election.
Jenner wouldn’t answer.
“I am not going to get into that,” Jenner said. “That election is over with. I think that Donald Trump did do some good things. What I liked about Donald Trump was that he was a disrupter.”
Despite no political experience, Jenner excels at misdirected answers
But did he win, Behar pressed?
“I want to go in and be a thoughtful disrupter in Sacramento. We need to change the system, and I want to change the system for the positive.”
If nothing else, Jenner is adept at that sort of misdirected answer when questioned over things she doesn’t want to talk about. For instance, when host Sara Haines asked Jenner about her opposition to trans girls playing sports on girls’ teams, Jenner said, “To be honest with you, it’s a very small issue in the state of California. We have so many bigger issues in this state, like immigration. Right now we have a huge immigration issue in this state. As governor, I would first close the southern border.”
And finish the wall for good measure, she said.
Meghan McCain asked a leading question about California Gov. Gavin Newsom: “How do you intend to resuscitate the hundreds of thousands of lives and dreams that have been crushed by Gov. Newsom’s inconsistent policies?”
Not that McCain had an opinion or anything.
But generally, the two segments consisted of Jenner claiming to be an outsider and emphasizing that this was a good thing. For some reason, a lack of experience and expertise has somehow been sold as the ultimate qualification for jobs that typically require experience and expertise.
Trump took that belief to its logical, or maybe illogical, conclusion. Or so it seemed. Jenner’s appearance touting her candidacy — along with the election of politicians like Marjorie Taylor Greene who appear to seek office not to accomplish anything but to make a name for themselves with the conservative base — makes you realize how quaint the notion of things like public service are for some people.
Don’t forget: Jenner has explicit ties to Trump’s team
Maybe working your way up through the ranks of elected office is no longer the proving ground for politicians. Maybe being super rich, famous in large part for being famous on a reality show, and then stomping around calling yourself an outsider is the path to glory.
Or office, at least.
Jenner has explicit Trump ties. She voted for him in 2016, said she stopped supporting him in 2018 and said she didn’t vote at all in 2020, but a record of her voting history ABC News obtained says she did.
Former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale and Caroline Wren, a former Trump fundraiser with ties to the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, reportedly have been helping Jenner with her campaign. “View” host Sunny Hostin asked Jenner about that.
“I wanted to put the best group of people, as you would call it, insiders, for a political campaign,” Jenner said. “I was able to hire some of the best people out there to join campaign. And it is more than just Brad or Caroline. There is a whole host of people that have worked with me over the past few months.”
Only the best people. Stop me if you’ve heard this song before.
Jenner isn’t polling well in California. It seems unlikely that she will win and become governor.
But not as unlikely in 2015 that Trump would make it through the Republican primary and win the election. Stranger things have happened.
