The election official, working out of a West Hollywood polling station, was spotted wearing at least three items of pro-Trump memorabilia: a Trump 2020 hat, a Trump Train mask and a T-shirt with “Where’s Hunter?” printed on the chest.

“Where’s Hunter?” was a common refrain in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election by Trump and his supporters, who pushed the line in the midst of Trump’s second impeachment trial.

Twitter user @Smiling_Trina shared the photo, posing the question “Isn’t this s—t illegal?”

It is, with some caveats. The state of California prohibits electioneering, or wearing or displaying anything “that advocates for or against any candidate or measure on the ballot within 100 feet” of a voting site. That includes shirts and hats containing “electioneering information.”

While Trump himself isn’t on the ballot, he’s visibly well-connected to leading Republican recall candidate Larry Elder and has repeatedly issued false statements about the legitimacy of Tuesday’s election.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk confirmed to SFGATE that the worker was “released and is no longer working at the vote center.”

“The election worker was contacted and advised that the attire was inappropriate and unacceptable,” said the county representative in an emailed statement to SFGATE and on Twitter.

But “his response” and “reports that other workers had previously counseled him on this” resulted in his release, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson also confirmed to SFGATE that the incident took place in West Hollywood.
