Chinese cryptocurrency romance scam defeats Apple security

Scammers who use fake dating profiles of glamorous and wealthy women to dupe men out of money have breached Apple’s App Store security.

Criminals set up false identities on Facebook Dating and Tinder to lure victims over several months, the security company Sophos claimed.

One of the profiles purported to be of a young woman from London who had a seemingly lavish lifestyle, posting photos from top restaurants, expensive shops and destinations. The profile featured content from the BBC, including on the death of Queen Elizabeth, to support the woman’s story.

After establishing a rapport with a man on the dating platform, the woman told him that her uncle worked for a financial firm and invited him trade in cryptocurrency.
